Back in the 1990s, something remarkable happened. The web didn't just link computers—it linked minds. When you launched a website, you weren't just throwing content into the void. You were joining a massive, self-organizing ecosystem where every new addition made everyone smarter.

What This Means for Your Projects

But when you're building on AI, think strategically:

Get involved with open AI projects and standards. Just like the web thrived because of shared protocols and open-source contributions, AI needs that same collaborative mindset. Platforms that embrace openness and participation will probably drive the next wave of innovation.
Design for human-AI collaboration, not replacement. The most transformative applications won't be the ones that remove humans from the equation. They'll be the ones that amplify human creativity and expertise—while staying honest about their limitations.
The Road Ahead
Maybe I'm being too negative. Maybe the AI labs will open up. Maybe the next generation of AI tools will be more participatory, more transparent, more aligned with the collaborative ethos that made the web so transformative.
Or maybe future generations will look back at this period as a transition phase—impressive but ultimately held back by its closed, centralized architecture.
One thing's for sure: the developers and companies that will thrive are the ones who remember the lessons of the 1990s. Technology succeeds when it gives people the power to participate, create, and connect. The question isn't whether AI is powerful. It's whether AI will be our technology—or just technology for us.
